with distant shoutings

as I watched your face in light
from the flames
we stood
back away from the heat
behind the barricades
as the flashing lights
and flashlights
and the fire
reflected in your eyes
and smoke and fog
enveloped us from
time to time
with the distant shoutings of
officers and firefighters and
rush of water through hoses
at our feet,
the crackles faded
and the dawn broke
catching us entwined
asleep on the lawn
across the street
